Scour the shelves of any health food store and there seems to be a supplement for every ailment. And now, in the age of the internet, just a quick search for said ailment will produce a myriad of ads for every miracle cure in a bottle.

With all that being said, I’m actually a big fan of supplements... for that purpose... to supplement a healthy eating plan and potentially target some specific health issues that need specific attention.

But with so many options, how do you choose?

Below I have listed the 5 supplements we currently offer in our Live Smart Nutritionals supplement line. Since every person’s needs are different, you may need some, all, or none at all... and that’s ok!

Energize Daily Greens Powder

Energize is our all-natural, energizing greens powder that is chock full of vitamins, minerals, digestive enzymes, and pre- and probiotics. My favorite part about Energize is that it does not contain caffeine or dangerous stimulants, so the increased energy comes from the natural ingredients that support your body to make its own natural and sustained energy.

There are so many reasons a high-quality greens powder can be a great addition to your weight loss eating plan but, hands down, the top two reasons I see all the time among our members is that it helps them control afternoon cravings and it helps them avoid the afternoon energy crash.

Energize is a good fit for you if you often experience any of the following…

  • You find yourself dragging mid-morning or mid-afternoon, making your work or daily tasks difficult to accomplish.
  • You have increased cravings for sugary snacks, especially in the afternoon, to get through the slump in your day.
  • You don’t enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables and tend to gravitate towards the same ones over and over again.
  • You don’t feel well rested in the morning, even after a good night's sleep.

A huge downside I keep seeing in the supplement industry is that manufacturers jump on the bandwagon to produce the next popular supplement and, in an effort to get to market faster than their competitors, end up cutting corners and not focusing on quality. That's why many of the greens powders you find on Amazon and in some large retail stores are not 3rd party tested and are packed with fillers and additives.

Here are just a few of the ingredients I found in the most popular greens powders sold on Amazon:

  • Guar gum
  • Sunflower oil powder
  • Natural flavors (an unregulated term)
  • Sucralose (yes, an artificial sweetener in a so-called health drink)

Our Energize formula does NOT contain any of these dangerous ingredients and additives, so you can confidently take it every day without worrying about putting  dangerous fillers in your body.

Energize is so easy to incorporate into your day. You just mix it with water and have it first thing in the morning or alongside your healthy breakfast.

OmegaPURE Essential Omega-3s

I don’t say this often, but I truly believe just about every person should be taking a quality Omega-3 product. I even have my teenage boys on an Omega-3 supplement.

Fish oil, the best source for quality Omega-3 fatty acids your body can use, contains Omega-3s, specifically DHA and EPA, which our bodies cannot make on their own. These fatty acids are critical for the optimum function of our brains, hearts, muscles, and joints (just to name a few), and it's vitally important that we get them from either food or supplementation.

Because the majority of people today are not getting enough foods like salmon, sardines, and anchovies in their diets (and honestly, it would really be hard to), supplementation is highly recommended.

The list of benefits of Omega-3 is endless and includes...

  • Reduces the risk of heart disease, help stabilize cholesterol levels and lower triglycerides
  • Supports cognitive function and memory
  • Helps combat chronic inflammation in the body
  • Supports retina health and may reduce the risk of macular degeneration
  • Alleviates joint pain and stiffness, particularly in arthritis
  • Supports metabolism, balances blood sugar, and may lead to accelerated weight loss

And that's just to name a few! What an amazing list! You can see why I recommend an Omega-3 supplement to just about everyone.

OmegaPure is a good fit for you if you…

  • Have a family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, or high triglycerides or you are currently suffering from any of these conditions yourself
  • Have a family history of diabetes or blood sugar related illnesses or you are suffering from this yourself
  • Have a family history of Alzheimer's or dementia
  • Suffer from any condition related to inflammation in your body

With Omega-3 supplements becoming so popular, there are many brands being sold today that are extremely low-quality and loaded with fillers and potentially dangerous additives. The majority of them are also not 3rd party tested and may use the cheapest and lowest-quality Omega-3s available to keep their profit margins as high as possible. If that wasn’t bad enough, many of these bottles end up on the supermarket shelf for months, maybe even years, slowly creating rancid oils with no regulations in place to keep bottles fresh.

So, yes, it is important to take an Omega-3 daily, but please be very careful which one you take.

Our Omega-3 supplement is 3rd party tested for purity and quality and does not contain any unnecessary additives or fillers, so you can feel confident about what you’re putting in your body every single day.

InflamCALM Essential Daily Turmeric

Turmeric is another one of those staple, foundational supplements that I recommend extremely often, especially to anyone suffering from conditions like arthritis or nagging joint pain.

Turmeric contains curcumin, which has the power to decrease inflammation and pain in the body just as much as over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil and Motrin. It accomplishes this by several mechanisms, including the COX-2 pathway blocked by NSAIDs.

That is amazing news for people who find themselves dependent on these anti-inflammatory drugs just to function well throughout the day. If you can accomplish the same pain relief with something natural that is also providing your body with other incredible benefits, that will always be a better choice than a drug that also comes with dangerous side effects (stomach ulcers and other serious gastrointestinal issues).

Similar to Omega-3s, the list of benefits that come with taking turmeric is quite extensive, but here are just a few...

  • Combats chronic inflammation, which is linked to diseases such as arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes
  • Helps reduce joint pain and stiffness, particularly in those with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Shows potential in reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's
  • Improves heart health and cholesterol levels
  • Helps soothe digestive disorders, including gas, bloating, and inflammatory conditions like IBS
  • Strengthens the immune system

It is important to note that turmeric’s benefits in the body are seen more powerfully when combined with black pepper for increased absorption. That is why our InflamCALM formula includes BioPerine, which is an extract of black pepper, clinically shown to increase the absorption of the curcumin that you take.

InflamCALM is a great option for you if you...

  • Have arthritis or suffer from muscular pain often
  • Have a family history of arthritis
  • Suffer from consistent digestive issues like bloating, gas, constipation, or diarrhea
  • Have a history of Alzheimer's or dementia in your family

InflamCALM is made with...

  • Organic, non-GMO plants
  • Absolutely zero added sugars
  • Gluten free Curcuma Longa roots
  • Vegan-friendly ingredients
  • None of the eight most common allergens (milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans)

So you can be certain you are getting the highest quality ingredients when you take InflamCALM each day.

SkinREJUV Anti-Aging Collagen Formula

Aging is just a natural part of life. Our bodies are not quite the same at 50 as they were at 20, and that’s ok! But it doesn’t mean we can’t do our very best to support it along the way.

One significant change we see as we age is in our skin, and one of the biggest reasons is a decline in collagen beginning as early as 30 years old.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, providing structure, strength, and elasticity to various tissues. It forms the building blocks of skin, muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissues. Think of it as the "glue" that holds your body together.

The great news is that supplementing with high-quality collagen has been shown to...

  • Reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Relieve joint pain and stiffness
  • Reduce symptoms of osteoarthritis
  • Help maintain bone density and strength
  • Improve hair thickness and nail growth
  • Support a healthy gut
  • Help counteract bone density loss, particularly in menopausal and postmenopausal women

Another great list of incredible benefits, especially for women!

The wonderful thing about SkinREJUV is that it is not just plain collagen like so many other products. We have enhanced the benefits of collagen alone by adding several nutrients that support skin, hair, and nail health.

Nutrients like...

  • Horsetail extract, a powerful anti-aging nutrient that protects your cells from "free radical" damage. It promotes skin elasticity and hair and nail strength
  • Bamboo extract, which stimulates collagen production on a cellular level while improving firmness in skin, hair, and nails
  • Hyaluronic acid, which speeds up the wound and scar healing process while drawing in much-needed moisture for improved skin hydration

SkinREJUV is a great choice for you if...

  • You have noticed an increase in fine lines and wrinkles
  • Your hair is thinning or shedding
  • Your nails are brittle or won’t grow
  • You're noticing more skin crepiness as you age

The great part about collagen is that it is so easy to use and to incorporate into your daily eating plan. You can add it to your morning coffee or tea; add it to foods like oatmeal, yogurt, or soup; or combine it with Energize to make the ultimate nutrient-rich morning drink.

If you or someone you love has been told they have high cholesterol, this article is a must-read.

I just finished watching an interview with Dr. Robert Lustig M.D., author of Metabolical, and wow… my mind is blown!

I’ll give you a brief summary of the key takeaways below, but trust me—it’s worth watching the whole thing, especially if you've been told by your doctor that you have high cholesterol.

To find it, search "Understand Your CHOLESTEROL PANEL & Metabolic Health Tests - the ULTIMATE Guide Dr. Robert Lustig" on YouTube.

Now, I’ve known for many years that eating foods high in cholesterol and fat does NOT cause high cholesterol levels in your body. There are countless studies and books written by leading doctors that support this truth.

But somehow, despite all this science, so many people still think that foods like eggs, shrimp, red meat, butter, and healthy oils (like coconut oil) are the problem.

I’m here to tell you… they are NOT!

I would scream it from the mountaintops if I could! This is so important.

The real culprit? Can you guess?

SUGAR! (And refined carbs come in at a close second.)

It all boils down to your metabolic health—how well your body processes glucose and handles insulin.

Here are some key points from Dr. Lustig’s interview that everyone should know:

  • Triglycerides: When measured in a fasting state, they tell you how your liver handles carbs and sugar in your diet.
  • VLDLs and triglycerides: Your liver converts sugar into fat and packages it into VLDLs (a type of cholesterol).
  • Small dense LDL: This is the harmful type of LDL that can lead to plaque formation and cardiovascular issues.
  • Triglyceride-to-HDL ratio: This is a crucial marker for insulin resistance and heart disease risk.
  • Fasting insulin levels: These can give you insight into your liver function and overall metabolic health.
  • Sugar and refined carbs: These contribute to liver fat, but exercise and intermittent fasting can help reduce it.
  • Cholesterol panel interpretation: It’s essential to understand how the different markers work together. The total cholesterol number? It’s often misleading.
  • Triglycerides and HDL: Their ratio tells you more about your liver health and heart disease risk than the total cholesterol number.
  • Small dense LDL and liver fat: Sugar consumption and liver fat cause high levels of small dense LDL, which is more concerning than your total LDL levels.
  • Insulin resistance: This, often indicated by elevated fasting insulin, is a key factor in chronic metabolic diseases.

Making lifestyle changes—like cutting back on sugar, exercising, and intermittent fasting—can go a long way toward improving liver health and overall metabolic health.

So, what do you do if your lab results show high cholesterol? Here’s exactly what I’d tell you:

1. Ignore the total cholesterol number. Instead, focus on the ratio of triglycerides to HDL. If it's 1.5 or lower, you're in great shape! (The lower, the better.) My own recent blood test showed triglycerides at 88 and HDL at 98, giving me a ratio of 0.9—which, according to Dr. Lustig, means I should live forever… lol!

2. Ask if your fasting insulin levels were measured. If not, go back to your doctor and ask for that test. This will give you much deeper insights into your metabolic and liver health.

3. Cut out refined sugars and carbs. If you’re already following the New Life Promise meal plans, this is exactly what we do in the first four weeks.

4. Exercise is non-negotiable. If you’re not exercising yet, start with walking, and then work up to strength training three times a week.

5. Begin taking an Omega-3 supplement immediately. “There's strong evidence that omega-3 fatty acids can significantly reduce blood triglyceride levels.” as reported on the MayoClinic website. I’ve already written extensively on how the quality of Omega-3s you buy is vital so here is the one I recommend to all of our members:

Pure, clean, and effective OmegaPure-> Get your OmegaPure HERE

*NOTE - Dr. Lustig does recommend intermittent fasting, though I typically don’t for women. Men seem to do well with it, but for us ladies, our hormones (especially during perimenopause and menopause) can make it a little trickier.

But I promise, even without intermittent fasting, these changes can make a world of difference.

Take Patricia G., for example—a member of our NLP family. She started her journey in January, and by May, her cholesterol levels were fantastic. Here’s what she shared:

"I began this journey not necessarily to lose weight, but to get healthier. In December, my cholesterol was high, and I was prescribed medication, which I couldn’t take. I found this program, and something about it just felt right. I followed the plan faithfully, and I even enjoyed the food! By May, my doctor told me my cholesterol levels were great—better than they’ve been in years. I’m so thankful to be part of this group. Never give up—just take it one day at a time!"

With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to getting your cholesterol under control. If you'd like some additional help with losing weight, look no further than the New Life Promise plan!

Let’s dive into a topic that’s super close to my heart: type 2 diabetes. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know this isn’t just any subject for me. My passion for nutrition kicked off with my grandmother and mother, who both had type 2 diabetes. Their journeys sparked my deep dive into health, weight loss, diabetes, and blood sugar control. So, yeah, this is personal.

I get a ton of questions from folks who’ve just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or are pre-diabetic, asking if our program can help them. And the answer is a big, enthusiastic yes! Our meal plans were originally crafted for my mom, and they’ve gone on to help thousands of others manage their blood sugar effectively.

Now, let me break down why our approach works so well. Spoiler alert: it’s not magic. It’s all about balanced nutrition. This isn't some secret formula; it’s about ensuring you get the right mix of protein, carbs, and healthy fats in every meal. This balance is key to stabilizing blood sugar levels.

I checked out the latest recommendations from the American Diabetes Association, and while they've improved, they still miss a crucial point: the importance of protein. Just counting carbs won't cut it. You need enough protein to balance those carbs. When you eat carbs, your blood sugar naturally rises, triggering insulin release. For those with type 2 diabetes, this response can be sluggish or off-kilter. Protein helps smooth out these spikes, so it's essential to include it in every meal.

Healthy fats also play a part in keeping your blood sugar levels stable. Combining protein and healthy fats with your carbs ensures you won't experience those nasty blood sugar and insulin spikes, reducing your need for medication.

Here’s how you can put this into action:

  1. Protein with Every Meal: Make sure every meal and snack includes protein. Think eggs, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, nuts, and lean meats.
  2. Healthy Fats: Incorporate fats like avocado, olive oil, and nuts to help keep blood sugar stable.
  3. Balanced Carbs: Opt for healthy carbs like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and always pair them with a protein source.

For example, a typical, well balanced day for a diabetic could be:

Breakfast: Spinach Tomato Omelet or The Best Gluten-Free Pancakes (Week 1 and Week 4 of the New Life Promise program)

Lunch: Tasty Turkey Burgers and The Best Carrot Fries (Week 2 of the New Life Promise program)

Snack: Greek yogurt and berries

Dinner: Chicken Cacciatore with a side salad (Week 4 of the New Life Promise program)

Each of these recipes contains a good balance of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats to keep blood sugar stable all throughout the day.

Before you dive into these changes, have a chat with your doctor. Adjusting your diet can significantly impact your blood sugar levels, and our meal plans often show results in just a week. That might mean tweaking your medication, just like it did for Linda…

In just 2 ½ weeks my blood sugar dropped sooo much I had to stop my Metformin!! I’d been on medication for probably 15 years! This lifestyle is great for diabetes!! - Linda B.

Managing type 2 diabetes can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. By focusing on balanced meals with adequate protein, healthy fats, and mindful carb intake, you can naturally regulate your blood sugar levels. And remember, it’s never too late to make these changes – the benefits can be life-changing.

The key takeaway? Every meal should include enough protein to balance the carbs. This simple approach can make a huge difference in managing your blood sugar. Start today, talk to your doctor, and witness the positive changes in your health.

Let’s tackle this together. If you’re not sure where to start, we’ve done all the hard work for you by creating all your meal plans, shopping lists and recipes.

One of the most common questions I get when women find our program is,

"Isabel, can I still lose weight even though I’m currently navigating menopause?"

The answer is a resounding YES, and thousands of women in our community are already seeing and enjoying incredible results.

I will turn 51 in October. Before I started the plan, I was feeling hopeless in regards to losing the extra weight I’ve gained, supposedly because of hormonal changes, so "normal" at this age.

Well, it doesn’t have to be like that! Nothing is impossible with God! He can give us the strength we need to commit to this plan.

I’m celebrating that I've lost 40.3 pounds (and counting).

We are truly what we eat! This plan works!!

- Mele P. (a happy New Life Promise member)

What exactly are these women doing?

Below is a great checklist to help you get started on your menopause weight loss journey. Although every woman is individual and your personal needs may be different, I have found the 5 tips below to be the most helpful to any woman wanting to lose weight even during their menopausal years.

#1 - Increase Protein Intake

Oftentimes, women will tell me they’re eating super healthy but still gaining weight. The culprit is typically their protein intake or lack thereof.

I had a good friend tell me,

"But I’m eating so healthy.  I eat oatmeal for breakfast, a salad for lunch, fruit as a snack, and chicken and vegetables for dinner. And I’m still gaining weight, especially around my middle. What am I doing wrong?"

Can you see what the problem is here? There is hardly any protein included throughout the day. The majority of her protein is in her evening meal and that is not nearly enough.

During menopause, protein is essential for maintaining muscle mass, which is crucial for a strong metabolism. Start including 20-30g of protein in each meal, aiming for 80-120g per day. You will notice a significant difference, not only in your energy levels but in your metabolism, finally getting your body to drop the unwanted weight.

#2 - Consume Fiber-Rich Foods

Fiber is vital for digestion and overall health. Foods like fruits, vegetables, oats, lentils, and nuts should be staples in our diet. Aim for at least 25g of fiber per day to support a healthy gut and assist in weight loss.

If you’re not sure what 25g of fiber looks like, just be sure to include a minimum of one high-fiber food each time you eat.

Here's a sample day, with the high-fiber food highlighted:

Breakfast: oatmeal with almond butter and strawberries

Lunch: Chicken and Veggie Quinoa Skillet (from Week 1 of the New Life Promise program)

Snack: almonds and an apple

Dinner: Zesty Beef and Veggie Meatloaf with Zesty Roasted Sweet Potatoes (from Week 3 of the New Life Promise program)

Also notice that there is even more fiber in some foods I didn’t highlight like the almond butter, strawberries, almonds, and veggies added to each meal.

Fiber can be a game changer when it comes to our weight loss efforts, especially during menopause.

#3 - Engage in Strength Training

Strength training is vital during menopause as it helps preserve muscle mass, which naturally declines with age.

I highly recommend every woman do a full-body strength training workout 3 days a week, regardless of whether they are a beginner or an advanced exerciser.

If you are a beginner, a program like our BodyFIT Foundations program would be a great place to start. It is suited for even the most beginner exerciser but can also be modified for those who are more advanced.

Supporting healthy muscle mass is one of the best ways to keep your metabolism going strong, even during menopause.

#4 - Regular Walking

Walking is an excellent low-impact exercise that can be easily incorporated into your daily routine. People often underestimate the power of walking and assume it is not enough. But I’m here to tell you, walking can dramatically change your weight loss efforts and your body overall.

Begin by tracking your steps and then slowly increase your step count each day. There is no need to go from no walking to 10,000 steps right away. Actually, I highly recommend against that.

Track your steps for a day, and if you’re currently at 3,000, shoot for 3,500 the next day. Do that for a few days and then increase another 500 steps. Do this incrementally and slowly until you are getting between 8,000 and 10,000 steps per day.

Again, slow and steady is the goal here. Even if it takes several months to get there, you are dramatically increasing your cardiovascular health, endurance, and metabolic rate in the process.

#5 - Consider Supplements

Certain supplements can be extremely supportive during menopause. Specifically, doctors are starting to recommend Omega-3s, Magnesium, Vitamin D, and Turmeric as an integral part of a menopause supplement plan.

Begin by taking the best anti-inflammatory duo, Omega-3 and Turmeric, which have both been found to have a dramatic effect on those pesky menopausal symptoms.

Our OmegaPURE and InflamCALM formulas have been tested for the utmost purity and effectiveness. Be extremely careful with over-the-counter varieties, which have been found to contain more fillers and additives than actual beneficial ingredients.

Remember, your body can and will lose weight during menopause with the right strategies in place. Begin with the 5 tips above to support your metabolism and encourage weight loss even as your hormones change.

Are you suffering from arthritis pain?

So was one of our wonderful members, Roberta, until she made one tweak in her health plan...

I have taken InflamCALM for a month now and I positively love it. I am 81 years old (not quite sure how I got here so fast) and have arthritis in my right knee, hip and lower back. Not only can it be very painful but I have been walking with a limp, which I hate. Since almost immediately the pain has subsided and the limp is much better...sometimes not there. I am not healed, the issue is still there but doesn't hurt and is not controlling me. So grateful.

A study reported in Harvard Health tells us why:

This particular study published in BioMedical Central Journal reported that curcumin (the active ingredient in InflamCALM) may help ease symptoms of osteoarthritis.

In the study, researchers enrolled 139 participants, all who suffered from knee osteoarthritis that was at least moderately severe and required treatment with NSAIDs (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

For one month, they were given either the NSAID diclofenac or curcumin.

Here's what this study found:

  • Both treatments relieved arthritis symptoms and helped to a similar degree: 94% of those taking curcumin and 97% of those taking diclofenac reported at least 50% improvement.
  • People reported fewer side effects with curcumin. For example, none of the study subjects taking curcumin needed treatment for stomach trouble, but 28% of those taking diclofenac needed treatment.
  • Those taking curcumin lost, on average, nearly 2% of their body weight in just four weeks - that's 3.5 pounds for a 175-pound person.

Of course, this is just one study, and everyone's pain, arthritis, and overall health is very different. But this does offer those who are suffering from arthritis pain a more natural and healthier alternative to pharmaceutical drugs.

Arthritis literally means "joint inflammation," so if we know that inflammation is at the root cause, we can take many anti-inflammatory measures to get it under control.

Here is what I would recommend:

Begin by eliminating the greatest inflammatory culprits. If you had a raging fire in your home, you would not continue to pour gasoline on it. Likewise, "pouring" sugar, processed foods, and refined starches on your arthritis is only making the situation worse. Start with whichever is the biggest culprit for you (maybe sugar), and watch how quickly your pain begins to subside.

Next, add in some anti-inflammatory heroes. Some of my favorites are blueberries, broccoli, avocado, fatty fish (like salmon), and extra virgin olive oil. Thankfully, your New Life Promise and LiveSmart meal plans make this super easy since we always make it a point to include as many anti-inflammatory foods as possible.

And last, but certainly not least, begin taking a natural supplements that is chock full of curcumin. The active ingredient in our InflamCALM formula is Curcumia Longa and is a powerhouse when it comes to combating chronic inflammation.

If you're currently suffering from arthritis or any other inflammatory condition, I highly recommend you add this quality turmeric supplement to your daily routine. Alongside a healthy eating plan, it is one of the best ways I keep my body from accumulating any unnecessary inflammation.

I received this email from an acquaintance the other day…

“Isabel, my girlfriend is really struggling with some digestive issues. I don’t know many of the details, but would your eating plan be good for her?”

I get questions similar to this one all the time. People will name an ailment or a symptom and ask if the New Life Promise program would be a good fit for them.

I say this with modesty, but the answer is typically YES, not because I have created the best nutrition program out in the world, but because the health principles we teach in this program are the foundational principles of any good health and nutrition program.

You see, even though there are so many nutrition programs available today, all of the ones that are effective for long-term, healthy weight loss all have a few key principles in common.

Notice I said long-term and healthy. Because, sure, anyone can figure out how to lose weight using drastic, extreme measures, but what we have seen time and time again is that those extreme strategies only end up in greater weight gain after the program is complete.

These are the things I find most important to consider when determining whether or not an eating plan would be a good long-term nutrition solution for your weight loss and health goals.

#1 - Who is the teacher?

I would love for everyone in the world to enjoy the way I teach, but that’s just not realistic. My approach has always been one that is soft and gentle and that works for some, but not everyone.

Some people need army drill sergeant style, while others might need a detailed scientist. Some people respond better to females while others respond better to males.

This seems like such a small detail, but I assure you it's not. Many people have shared with me that they began to fall off the wagon on a program because they just didn’t mesh well with the person teaching.

It’s good to consider your values and what you consider the most important things in your life. I can tell you that, for me, it is very important that the teachers I listen to have God in their life. This doesn’t just go for health, but also for business, for homeschooling, and for homemaking.

#2 - The foundation is food, not products.

So many programs today tell you that they “have made it easy for you” because all you have to do is open a package, reheat, and eat… but what are you learning from that? I would argue that you are learning the exact opposite of what you need to learn in order to enjoy long-term weight loss and health success.

Preparing and nourishing our bodies with great food does take some forethought and it does take some time.

Thankfully, there are ways to make this easier on yourself that don’t require pre-packaged food products. You can follow meal plans like the ones found in the New Life Promise program. You can batch cook so you have food readily available in the freezer and in the refrigerator. You can create new routines so healthy eating just becomes second nature to you.

The foundation of any quality health program should be the delicious food the Lord has provided for us from His earth.

This does not mean there aren’t some products that can help us along the way. I personally love to add a quality greens powder, collagen, Omega-3s, and turmeric to most people’s health regimen, but even those things are not absolutely necessary for long-term health success. They can be very helpful, but they are not required.

#3 - Elimination is not the answer.

If a program is promoting heavy restrictions on certain foods or, even worse, entire food groups, it may be worth thinking twice about.

In a world filled with extremes, I see people take elimination diets way too far.

No grains, no fruits, and now there are even some diets that eliminate all vegetables and only have you eat meat all day.

To me, that immediately puts up some red flags. I say it all the time,

“The best eating plan to lose weight is one that you can eat for a lifetime.”

Again, this is why our program along with programs that are rooted in wholesome foods, are truly the ones that prove the longest success rate among those who begin a healthy eating program. Not only does the eating plan feel doable, it feels doable for a lifetime.

As you continue this health road that you are on alongside the Lord, always remember that the basics of healthy eating are quite simple and have truly lasted the test of time.

So the next time someone asks you, “Will your eating plan help me with (insert health issue)”, chances are you can confidently say “Yes, and here is why.”

If you're ready to live a better, healthier life, look no further than the New Life Promise plan!

“Non Scale Victory. I started on Nov 13. My blood sugar was consistently running high in the mornings and I couldn’t seem to get it under control. It took 2 days on this plan to get it down to normal and it has stayed normal since. I even took myself off Metformin over a week ago and it has still stayed in a normal range.” – Marcia Y.

We see posts like this one in the community almost daily. Diabetics who have been struggling to get their blood sugar numbers under control are able to get their numbers stable in less than a week and even greatly reduce their need for medication.

Of course, I always want you to consult with your doctor before making big changes in your medications, but what happens time and time again is that doctors see the great improvement in blood sugar numbers and quickly bring the medication dosage down or eliminate it all together.

But how is this possible?

How is it that people who have not been able to get their diabetes under control for countless years are all of a sudden seeing stable numbers they once thought were impossible?

To explain this phenomenon, I have to take you back 25 years to my early college years when I made it my life’s purpose to figure out how to control my mother’s out-of-control diabetes by just using food and natural methods. She was suffering with so many debilitating symptoms from all the medications she was on, I knew there had to be a better way.

Yes, even back then, the information was out there, but not as readily available as it is today. Back then, I had to scour the library and textbooks to find the information I needed. These days, a quick online search can get you an endless amount of information and instructions for exactly how to implement it.

But why, even with all the information right at our fingertips, are so many people still suffering from out-of-control type 2 diabetes and other blood sugar problems?

Because food is never used as the first line of defense.

No offense to doctors. I think they are invaluable, and I have the utmost respect for the medical community, but medical school has taught them to go straight to prescription medication first without considering potential lifestyle choices.

My mother’s doctors were absolutely floored when she came in 40 pounds lighter with stable blood sugar numbers and not having needed insulin in over a month.

How did my mom get such incredible results?

She did exactly what we do every single day on the New Life Promise program…

She ate unprocessed natural foods.

She eliminated all processed forms of sugar.

She balanced every meal with the right ratio of proteins, fats, and carbs.

No rocket science here and nothing complicated. Just good ol’ clean eating with the right metabolic ratios in place.

The only thing I may have done differently is I would have had her include an Omega-3 supplement and a Turmeric supplement along with her new way of eating.

Remember, this was the beginning stages of my own nutrition career, so I was not as well versed in supplements at that time, nor did I have access to the highest quality supplements.

Lucky for you and me, we now have readily available some of the most powerful and high-quality sources of both these super nutrients.

Because my mom suffered from high cholesterol, diabetes, and a good bit of joint and arthritis pain, I would have attacked all that inflammation with the powerful combination of Omega-3s and Turmeric together.

If I had to choose just one, I would have started her on the Omega-3s and then brought the Turmeric in when we could.

If you’re wondering which of these two powerful supplements is the best options for you, this post can help you decide…

Which is better for me? Omega-3 or Turmeric -> Read HERE

Please remember, the Lord made our bodies to heal. If you or someone you love is currently suffering from type 2 diabetes, there is so much that can be done that is simple and does not have to be complicated.

Several years ago, I had a woman in my Bible study who was in the midst of battling many health issues. One of those health issues was type 2 diabetes. She said something to me, that I've heard so many times before, and is always so difficult to hear...

"My doctor said there is nothing I can do about my diabetes. It's just genetic and there's nothing I can do about it."

Ugh. These words upset me so much because, yes, even though many of us (including me) may have been born with a genetic predisposition to type 2 diabetes, there is so much we can do to counter its effects.

Today, I am going to specifically focus on type 2 diabetes as well as those who have been told they are pre-diabetic.

First, let's discuss genetics.

If you come from a long line of family members with type 2 diabetes, you may think this is just your fate. Take me for example. My mom, my grandmother, and all the women on their side of the family were diagnosed with diabetes after 40 years old. Just reading that, you may think, "Wow Isabel. Seems like that's just the way it is in your family." But, what I know for sure is I have control over whether or not that gene is turned on.

Yes, you read that correctly. If you have type 2 diabetes, or are at risk for type 2, you have a lot of control over whether that gene has an opportunity to express itself inside your body.

Currently, my sister has already been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (at 40 years old) and I, per my doctor, am nowhere near a diagnosis and have an optimal A1C.

I don't say that to brag or speak negatively of my sister in any way (if you asked her, she would share this information with you just as I am doing right now). I tell you this because I want you to know that, no matter how strong your genetic inclination is for type 2 diabetes, you can overcome it and keep that diabetes gene quiet using the strategies I give you below.

What if you have already been diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes? The strategies you would use are the same, except you may need to discuss the adjustment of your medications with your physician.

Here are the top 3 things you can start doing right now to naturally manage your blood sugar levels (regardless of how high they may be at this time).

#1 - Keep your blood sugar balanced throughout the day by using optimal food balance. After following the meal plans in your New Life Promise plan for even just a few days, you begin to notice a consistent theme... every meal includes healthy protein, carbohydrate, and healthy fat... no exceptions. This optimal balance of macronutrients keeps your blood sugar stable throughout the day, keeping your blood sugar balanced naturally, without the need for excess insulin to control your blood sugar. This is why many type 2 diabetics experience a drastic reduction in their blood sugar and their need for medication, even after just a few days on the New Life Promise plan.

In order to ensure you are achieving this balance in each meal, look at your plate and ask yourself, "Where is my protein? Where is my carb? Where is my healthy fat?" Even if you're not struggling with diabetes, this is a critical question to ask at every meal... so much so that I've even taught it to my 8- and 10-year-olds.

#2 - Eat those optimally-balanced meals 3-4 hours apart throughout the day. Managing your blood sugar also requires you to provide your body with consistent fuel throughout the day. If you're going long hours with no food, and then eating large meals in one sitting, this is a recipe for a blood sugar roller coaster ride. That is why every New Life Promise meal plan provides 3 meals plus 1 mid-afternoon snack to prevent any blood sugar drops throughout the day.

#3 - Walk, walk, and then walk some more. One of the best ways to get your body to naturally use up the glucose flowing through your blood stream is through activity. Walking is one of the best ways to achieve this. With so many types of exercises to choose from, walking just doesn't receive as much credit as it's due. It's easy to do, requires no equipment, is easy on the joints, and can be done anytime, anywhere. I do my best to go on 2 short walks each day. I take a break from the computer before lunch and go for a 20-minute walk, and then I go for another 20-minute walk late afternoon. With all the fancy exercise strategies out there, sometimes we forget the simplest ones may be the best ones.

I pray that you read the words above and they bring you great hope... not just for yourself, but for those wonderful people in your life who may be struggling with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes and may feel hopeless in their efforts to overcome its side effects.

There is a word that has become rather trendy in the health space that you have probably heard countless times...

Inflammation.

As much as I do my best to stay away from fads and trends, this word should continue to receive as much attention as it has.

A majority of the nagging health ailments many people suffer from today can be attributed back to increased inflammation in the body. This makes our jobs of keeping ourselves healthy rather simple... decrease inflammation in the body as much as possible.

But simple doesn't necessarily mean easy.

Two supplements I have been recommending for almost my entire career as a nutritionist have been Omega-3s and Turmeric, both of which are absolutely incredible for lowering nagging inflammation in the body.

But with those recommendations has come the question...

"Isabel, what's the biggest difference between Omega-3s and Turmeric, and which one should I take?"

Great question.

Let's first take a quick look at each one individually.

Turmeric, on the other hand, contains curcumin, which has the power to decrease inflammation and pain in the body just as much as over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil and Motrin.

With both Omega-3s and Turmeric having such incredible benefits, it most definitely would be difficult to decide between the two.

My first recommendation is to take both if possible. I always lean on the side of fewer supplements, but these two are an important part of any anti-inflammatory protocol. It has also been shown that Turmeric has the power to enhance the benefits of Omega-3, which is another great reason to take them together.

But if that is not possible for you right now, I completely understand.

If I had to help you choose just one, here are the questions I would ask...

Do you have a family history of heart disease, high cholesterol, or high triglycerides? Or are you suffering from any of these conditions yourself? -> Go with Omega-3s

Do you have a family history of diabetes or other blood sugar related illnesses? Or are you suffering from any of these yourself right now? -> Go with Omega-3s

Do you suffer from joint pain, arthritis, or muscular pain often? -> Go with Turmeric

Do you suffer from consistent digestive issues like bloating, gas, constipation, or diarrhea? -> Go with Turmeric

Do you have a history of Alzheimer's or dementia in your family? -> Do your absolute best to take both.

So the answer to which one you should take is highly dependent on your current situation.

Remember that I have done all the hard work for you and sourced the absolute best Omega-3 and Turmeric supplements without any of the dangerous fillers and additives that can be found in most other brands. They are also both priced way below the amount many other companies would charge for supplements of this quality.

If you're going through menopause (or even perimenopause) and you're having trouble losing weight, you're not alone! Between the extreme hormonal fluctuations to the natural changes in metabolism as we age, it's normal to put on a bit of weight. Fortunately, with just a few simple adjustments, that weight doesn't need to stick around.

We've been helping women just like you lose weight and get their health back for many years. So just follow these 5 tips for losing weight during menopause and you'll look leaner, be bursting with energy, and get through "the change" feeling better than ever.

#1 - Establish a Nighttime Routine

Sleep and weight loss go hand in hand. Without a good night's sleep, you'll get intense cravings for sweets and starches, and your cortisol levels will go up. Cortisol not only makes you feel stressed, but it also causes bloating and forces the body to hold on to excess fat.

During menopause, your sleep becomes even more important. Between the hormonal changes, hot flashes, and night sweats, getting your 8 hours takes a bit more work.

Thankfully, you can decrease cortisol and get more sleep by simply establishing a nighttime routine. The routine sends a signal to your body that it's time to relax and rest easy for the night.

Start your routine about an hour before bed. First, put your phone or computer away. The blue light interferes with melatonin production and keeps you awake.

After the phone is stashed, do a simple, relaxing activity. Whether you read a book, take a bath, or set aside a few minutes to write down your thoughts for the day, your mind will start to unwind and your stress levels will go down.

Then, give yourself the chance to sleep. Sleep scientist Matthew Walker says the best way to get more sleep is to give yourself a greater "sleep opportunity." Really, that’s just a fancy way of saying "Go to bed!"

Try to go to bed at the same time every night. Then, make sure you're tucked in with the lights off at least 8 hours before you need to get up. Even if you don't fall asleep right away, the fact that you're resting for a full 8 hours will help your general energy and fat burning potential.

With a soothing nightly routine and greater sleep opportunity, you'll start falling asleep faster, staying asleep longer, and feeling stress (and excess weight) melt away.

#2 - Lift Some Weights

As we age, muscle mass declines. Since muscle burns about three times as many calories as fat, we want all the muscle we can get! Now, I'm not saying you need to become a body builder, but as you go through menopause, it's important to include some kind of weight training so you stay strong and keep those calories burning.

Our favorite kind of weight training? Any kind that you are willing to do! It doesn't matter if you're using light dumbbells, heavy barbells, or just your body weight... just make sure you're doing some kind of strength training.

If you're new to working out or are just trying to be more active, my exercise program may be for you! BodyFIT Foundations is a powerful blend of workouts that leads you to freedom, flexibility, and strength on a path rooted in God’s guidance.

Strengthen your body in a God-loving way with BodyFIT Foundations »

#3 - Avoid Unfermented Soy

Soy comes in two forms: fermented and unfermented. The first kind of soy goes through a long fermentation process and becomes super gut-friendly and full of nutrients. Foods like natto, miso, and tempeh are all good sources of fermented soy.

But how often are you eating natto, miso, and tempeh? More often, we eat unfermented soy - soy milk, tofu, soy sauce. These foods are hard to digest and contain harmful isoflavones that are extremely important to avoid during menopause.

Isoflavones are chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body. Maybe you're thinking, isn't more estrogen good during menopause? Sadly, these chemicals block estrogen reception, so the real estrogen isn't absorbed properly, and your overall hormonal levels get thrown out of whack.

These isoflavones also interfere with your thyroid, which directly relates to weight gain. Overall, soy increases the symptoms of menopause and sometimes makes them worse.

Thankfully, soy is easy to avoid. If you don't like dairy, switch to coconut or almond milk. For vegetarian protein, try beans, lentils, and nuts.

Even soy sauce is easily replace - just use coconut aminos instead. It's gluten-free, vegan, lower in sodium, and contains 17 healthy amino acids. Plus, it tastes just like soy sauce! You get all the flavor, none of the side effects, and a little nutrition with every bite.

#4 - Shop the Perimeter of the Grocery Store

It's always good to eat whole vegetables, fruits, and protein, but it's even more important during menopause. As your hormones fluctuate, your appetite naturally increases. So, if your cravings have been crazy or you're feeling hungrier than ever, don't worry. It's perfectly normal.

Instead of trying to shut down your appetite or greatly restrict your calories to lose weight during menopause, it's better to let yourself eat the right foods.

Start by shopping only around the perimeter of the grocery store. There, you'll find produce, meat, dairy, and eggs - all things that will help you lose weight.

If you fill your diet with high-fiber vegetables and hearty protein (meat, eggs, beans), you don't have to worry about counting every calorie or fighting your appetite. Instead, you're fueling your body with healing, nutrient-rich food that will help you lose weight and lessen the symptoms of menopause.

By shopping the perimeter, you'll also avoid all the unpleasant processed food that lives in the center of the store. Processed foods are full of toxic, chemical ingredients that raise your blood sugar, harm your liver, and make it even harder to lose weight.

When you avoid processed junk and shop around the edges, you'll stay full AND start losing pounds.

#5 - Enjoy Coffee, the Right Way

Did you know that coffee can trigger hot flashes? It's true.

Strangely, it's not just the caffeine that triggers the flash. It's the heat. When you drink something hot (even a plain glass of hot water), that sudden heat can set off a flash. Now, caffeine might give you a more severe flash than a decaf beverage, but it's the temperature that really sets it off.

Instead of drinking a steaming hot cup of joe every morning, switch to iced coffee.

Now, this doesn't mean you can guzzle iced coffee all day and not feel any side effects. Too much caffeine interferes with sleep and increases blood pressure and cortisol levels - all things that get in the way of weight loss.

Thankfully, one cup of coffee is perfectly fine. It gives you a bit of caffeine for energy, but not enough to trigger side effects. With an 8-ounce iced coffee to start your day, you'll avoid hot flashes and keep your weight loss on track.

If you'd rather cut out coffee completely, try some peppermint essential oil for a boost of energy. Just rub a drop on your hands and deeply inhale the minty goodness. The strong scent will wake you up for sure!

With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to getting healthy during menopause. If you'd like some additional help with losing weight and managing your menopause symptoms, look no further than the New Life Promise plan!
